The weather is changing, the school systems are changing, the children are changing, and the expectations are changing. My question is, “Why is it so difficult for teachers to understand their delivery of instruction must change also?” In order for our students to be successful, schools must begin to understand how important it is to differentiate instruction. This simply means, modify instruction or an assignment in order to customize the effect to match the particular developmental level and skills of a student or group of students. Buddy reading is a form of differentiated instruction.
When individualized plans are thoughtfully developed, students are then allowed multiple opportunities to be successful. We must eliminate the ideology of all children are equal when we reference how they learn. If parents understand they can’t treat each of their children the same, then the same assumption is valid when deciding how they must be taught. We must learn our students by figuring out their learning style. The three most common are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.
Teachers must develop engaging lessons that meet the needs of all learners by giving students learning activities that let them perform the same learning objective with multiple mediums like summarizing a story they have read through narrative, drama, song, poetry, art, or design. Now, to answer my question, I believe many teachers truly understand how important it is to modify the delivery of their instruction, but there are many obstacles they face. There is a lack of materials, classroom management, parental support, time, administrator support, professional development, and educational resources.
If you have an idea of how you feel educators can improve differentiated instruction, don’t hesitate to post your comment, you just may help someone help a child.
